01 — About Johnstown
Johnstown sits in a deep valley where the Stonycreek and Little Conemaugh form the Conemaugh River. Steel made it boom. The Great Flood of 1889 made it famous worldwide. Today makers, riders, artists and brewers are writing its third act — affordable, creative, outdoorsy and fiercely proud.
Three major floods (1889, 1936, 1977) could not erase Johnstown. Flood memorials, museums and restored stone channels tell a story of engineering and empathy that still draws visitors from 40+ countries yearly.
Central Park, Federal Street and Cambria City hum with coffee roasters, breweries, vintage shops, the Pasquerilla Performing Arts Center and monthly ArtWorks strolls. Rents artists can actually afford.
Surrounded by Laurel Highlands. Whitewater on the Stonycreek, 1000+ acres at Stackhouse Park, Ghost Town Trail and Inclined Plane overlook — all within 15 minutes of downtown.
West End, Moxham, Old Conemaugh, Roxbury, Cambria City — porch culture, church festivals, pierogi sales and Friday night lights. You arrive as visitor, leave as neighbor.
Swiss settler Joseph Johns lays out Conemaugh town, later Johnstown.
South Fork Dam fails; 2,209 lives lost. Clara Barton & Red Cross launch first major relief.
Built after the flood as escape route, now National Historic Landmark and icon.
Downtown housing, trail connectivity, tech remote workers and year-round festivals fuel comeback.
02 — Must see
Start with these six. Each is 10 minutes from the next — Johnstown is compact by design.

World's steepest vehicular incline (71.9% grade). Ride your car up, watch the whole valley light up. Visitor center + overlook.

Carnegie Library museum downtown + National Memorial at South Fork Dam. Essential, moving, masterfully told.

Tree-lined square, 1920s storefronts, People's Natural Gas Park concerts, farmers market Saturdays May–Oct.

Survived 1889 flood and still carries trains. Walk the riverwalk for brutalist concrete channels and herons.

Ethnic historic district: breweries, Slovak pork dinners, polka, art lofts in former steel warehouses.

Hilltop mansions, overlooks, Roxbury Bandshell summer concerts and the best porch sunsets in PA.
03 — Deep history
Steel barons built mansions on the hill and mills in the valley. When the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club's dam broke on May 31, 1889, a 40-foot wall of water erased the city in 10 minutes. The world responded — and Johnstown rebuilt, twice more after 1936 and 1977.

04 — Outdoors

1000+ acres in city limits. 20 mi singletrack, deer, creeks.

Class I-IV releases. Greenhouse Park put-in, outfitters downtown.

36 mi crushed limestone rail-trail through mines & ghost towns.

14 mi from dam to city. Follow the flood's path by bike.
05 — Taste of J-Town

Cambria City pork + sauerkraut, Moxham pizza, Morley's gob cakes, church pierogi sales Fridays in Lent. Breweries: Coal Country, Buzzard's Nest, Outer Limits.
Bressler's Food, Press Bistro, Little City Coffee.
Frank's Place, Crow's Nest, Steel City Social.
Bottle Works, Community Arts Center, Gallery on Gazebo.

06 — Year round
40,000+ riders, downtown concerts, stunt shows. Loudest weekend of summer.
